This rules sheet is not meant to be all-inclusive; rather it is a summary of the more common rules, policies, and procedures used by the Intramural Sports Program. Important policy information can be found in the Intramural Sports Handbook. All team managers and players are responsible for reading this document and understanding the rules, policies, and procedures prior to participating in this activity.
General/Eligibility - See the Intramural Sports Handbook for complete listing of eligibility.
Intramural Team Participation - Individuals may only play on one team in the badminton league.
Identification - All players MUST present a UVM Cat Card to the IMS Supervisor prior to each game.
Playing Surface & Equipment
- Patrick Gymnasium
- Court Dimension: 44 ft x 22 ft (doubles)
- All equipment provided. Players may use their own racquets if desired, but all players must use IMS shuttles.
Scoring - Teams will play one match to 15 win by 2. The game is capped at 17. Every match is scheduled to be 15 minutes in length. At the end of the game, the winning team should report the score to staff and move on to play their next opponent. Teams typically play 3 matches per evening (format could change depending on team registrations or facility space).
Scoring format - If the serving side wins a rally, it receives a point, and serves again. However, they would move to the alternate service court. If the receiving side wins the rally, the score remains unchanged and the service passes to the next player in turn.
Doubles format: it's either your partner, or, if both players have just had a turn of serving, one of the opponents.
Singles format: turns over to your opponent:
Rally - A rally is won when a shuttle is hit over the net and onto the floor of the opponent's court. A rally is lost if the shuttle is hit into the net, or over the net but outside of the opponent's court. A rally is also lost if the shuttle touches the player's clothing or body, or if it is hit before it crosses over the net.
Serving - The service courts are slightly different for singles and doubles. A shuttle on the line is "in". The server and receiver stand in the diagonally opposite service courts (always right hand at the start of the game) but therefore players may move anywhere on their side of the net. The server must obey laws designed to force underhand delivery of the serve, and the receiver must stand still until the service is struck.

- The ball is contacted above the waist prior to being hit into the net.
- The ball is intentionally directed into the goal by something other than a broom (e.g. going off a foot or knee, excluding the defense putting the ball in their own net – regardless if by the broom or any body part).
- The ball strikes the official and then goes directly into the net.
- If a player scores a goal, but their momentum carries them or their stick into the crease, or goalie, the goal will be disallowed and an interference with the goalie will be called.
- Two-minute penalty can be given if deemed malicious.
Playing the Ball
The following guidelines apply to playing the ball:
- Players may not catch the ball. The ball may be knocked down using a hand, but it must be played by that player’s broom before it is touched by another team member.
- When swinging the broom in an attempt to make contact with the ball, no portion of the broom should extend above the waist.
- Exception: Goalkeepers in the crease or a free hit.
- The broom may be carried above the waist, but any attempt to contact the ball must be made from below the waist.
- Broomball is a non-contact sport. Players must play the ball at all times and not the person or a penalty shall be awarded.
Goalies
The designated goalie is the only person allowed in the goal crease. The goalie may catch the ball only when in the crease, and must get rid of it within five (5) seconds.
