So you've signed up for a group fitness pass and now you're left with the agonizing decision of what classes to register for. It's a tough choice with so many amazing options being offered this semester. If you're thinking about taking one of our cycling classes but are hesitant because you've never been before, keep reading!
Types of Classes
Any class labeled Cycling is held in Patrick Gym 217 by an in-person instructor. These classes are 45 minutes long. Sometimes instructors will choose to host themed classes such as 2010's, EDM, or house music. The other option is Les Mills SPRINT classes. These are also held in Patrick Gym 217 with a virtual instructor for 30 minutes. You can read more about Les Mills SPRINT classes by clicking here. Each class follows a similar workout plan. Why Take a Cycling Class?
There are many benefits to taking a cycling class. Cycling is a great cardio alternative workout to running and it's easier on the knees! It allows you to train indoors year-round with the motivation of an instructor and other participants. Not only that, a 30-minute cycling class can actually burn between 600-1000 calories depending on intensity! You can adjust your speed by peddling faster or slow and your resistance by increasing or decreasing your gears.
Before You Go:
- To take one of our cycling classes, sign-up using your group fitness pass on IMLeagues.
- Wear comfortable, breathable clothing.
- Remember to pack a water bottle, your CatCard, and a towel to bring with you.
- Make sure to arrive 15 minutes early to check-in and begin your pre-class warm-up.
In Class:
- When you arrive, check-in at the desk outside Patrick Gym 217.
- Adjust your bike seat and handlebars to fit your height. You can ask the instructor if you need any help.
- Expect to warm up for about 15 minutes before class begins.
- Your instructor (whether physical or virtual) will get right into the workout.
- Expect some high-intensity periods followed by short rest periods.
- You will have periods of standing (climbing) and sitting on your bike to work all of your muscles.
- After the workout, your instructor will guide you through a cooldown.
- Don't forget to raise your seat all the way and wipe down your bike before you leave!
Cycling classes may feel difficult at first, but if you continue attending class and working hard it also becomes addictive. Come check out a cycling class soon, we know you won't regret it!
