Facility Policies:
- A bouldering wall pass is required to climb.
- The bouldering wall will not be actively supervised. During operational hours staff will be located at the check-in desk.
- All climbers must wear closed toe shoes while climbing. Climbing shoes are recommended and can be checked out from the MAC Check-in Desk.
- The floor around the bouldering wall shall remain clear of items. Climbers are asked to utilize cubbies (outside of wall barrier) or lockers (across from check-in). Campus Recreation is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.
- Food and beverages are not permitted inside bouldering wall barrier.
- Climbing, like all physical activity, comes with inherent risks and may result in injuries to yourself or others. Climbers are to use caution and utilize safe climbing techniques while climbing and while moving around the bouldering wall area.
- All users accept full personal responsibility to take reasonable precautions to protect themselves from injury and not endanger other climbers and passersby while using the wall.
- Climb within your ability.
- Be aware of those around you while climbing:
- Do not climb over or under anyone.
- Climb down when you reach your goal or cannot continue.
- Jumping is not allowed.
- Spotting can be dangerous for both the climber and the spotter unless the spotter understands proper spotting technique. If you are new to climbing and do not know proper spotting technique, it is safer to not have a spotter.
- Campus Recreation reserves the right to suspend or remove access to the facility if a user is observed violating any of these safety policies or behaving in a way that puts themselves and/or others at risk.
- Please report any accidents, loose holds, or damage to staff at the MAC Check-in Desk.
- Patrons under the age of 18 are not permitted on the Bouldering Wall (excluding UVM students).
Chalk Use:
- Only liquid chalk provided by Campus Recreation is allowed for use on Bouldering Wall.
- We understand this may not be ideal for some climbers; however, this policy is in place to reduce chalk dust throughout MAC area that will result in potential safety issues.
- Liquid chalk is available at dispensers located around the wall.
- Please notify staff if a dispenser is empty.
Routes & Holds:
- Each route is limited to one person at a time.
- Routes are set according to the color of handholds.
- Spray wall does not have designed routes.
- Start a route with your hands on the hold (or holds) marked with a “V” and use only the holds of the same color to climb to the box of the same color on the top.
- Do not climb over the top of the wall. Doing so will result in having access revoked.
- Route setting will be conducted throughout the year by experienced setters.
Difficulty:
- The difficulty of routes is rated using the V-scale.
- VB is the easiest. The routes get progressively more challenging as the V rating increases. See diagram.
- Ratings are indicated on the tape at the starting hold of a route.
