First, see the good...
The UVM Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) has been helping people transform their practice while providing training to teach professionally since 2009. Comprised of UVM students, employees, and members of the public, each YTT cohort becomes a close-knit community, dedicated to deepening their understanding of yoga and developing the skills to be a caring yoga teacher.
The underlying philosophy of the training is to "First, see the good." John McConnell is the YTT director who leads most of the in-class time and also brings in experts from the yoga and UVM communities.
Some of the unexpected benefits of participation in the program include lifelong friendships, self-confidence, strong public speaking, greater focus, patience, self-awareness, and self-respect.
Here is what last year's YTT graduates say about the program:

Here is what last year's YTT graduates say about the program:
- "Recognize that you always have everything that you need within."
- "By striving for perfection, I've been missing out on what's happening in the moment."
- "I view my past-self less critically. The YTT has given me perspective that I am not a lesser person for my mistakes."
- "Tell yourself, "I love you. I love you. I love you," and begin to believe it."
- "I was so filled with doubt at first. Now I really know who I am."
- "I freaked out in the beginning, but now I feel so confident. It has been fun seeing how this training translates into the rest of my life."
- "What you do today is what you carry into your future. Slow down, settle in, and enjoy the journey to your future self."
- "It is the toughest thing I've ever done. It brought me joy, frustration… I just know I'm supposed to be here."
UVM's YTT is a 200-hour Yoga Alliance Certified program that includes 160 hours in-class time and 40 hours online. Most in-class times are Saturdays and Sundays 8am-12pm and 1:30-6:00pm. Please see the website for the full calendar of training times and dates. Each weekend has a unique theme and philosophical focus. Weekend sessions generally include pranayama (breath work), asana (the physical practice), yoga philosophy (ancient and modern), student-centered discussion, meditation, journaling, reflection, and lots of practice teaching and moving.
