
How to Run in the Winter

Vermont winters aren't always that conducive to enjoyable outdoor runs. But if you aren't treadmill-inclined (pun intended), here are some tips to make your outdoor runs safe and fun all season long!

- START SLOW It'll take a little longer for you to warm up when running in the cold. Either start with cardio and stretching inside or take it easy for your first few laps.
- HATS AND GLOVES ARE YOUR FRIENDS The wind off of Lake Champlain can make for some pretty gusty runs, and you really don't to get halfway into your run before realizing you haven't been able to feel your fingers for a little while. If you get too hot, it's easy to stuff them in a pocket.
- DON'T OVERDRESS It's not easy to run in a full-length parka. Make sure you're wearing enough to keep warm in sub-30 temperatures, but not so warm that you're sweating before you even start your workout. Layers are your best bet! The same goes for shoes – thermal boots may be waterproof and cozy, but they won't help your race time. Stick with sneakers with good traction and as little mesh as possible.
- FIND A BUDDY Not only will you have another source of motivation and a friend to chat with, running with a friend helps to make sure the both of you are safe throughout your workout.
- HYDRATE! You probably won't sweat as much as you would on a run in the summer, but dehydration is still a possibility. It's just as important to drink water before, during, and after your run during the winter as it is in the summer.
- KNOW WHEN IT'S TOO COLD There's a lot you can do to mitigate winter running hazards, but you can't always get rid of them entirely. Before you get outside, check the temperature, the wind chill, and how icy it is. It can get bitterly cold on campus, so it's important to know when you should do some indoor cardio.
