What to expect: Kickboxing?
10/22/2019 12:30:00 AM | The Well
If you're familiar with Campus Rec's group fitness programming, then you know that there are tons of classes to choose from. If you aren't sure what's right for you, stick around as The Well breaks down what you can expect from the different classes. This week, we're taking a look at KICKBOXING!
For fall 2019, Kickboxing is scheduled for Mondays and Tuesdays at 12:15-1:15pm, as well as Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7:15-8:15pm, and is taught by Dan Linde.
Here's what you should know about the class!
Before Class
- You should wear whatever you feel comfortable moving around in. Many students keep their shoes on during class, though some prefer to kick in socks or completely barefoot.
- Kickboxing is currently held in Patrick 217, which can be tricky to find. Starting in the main lobby, take the left doorway past the stairs and elevator, then take a right into a long, wide corridor – at the end, you should see a sign pointing up the stairs. You'll find the class up there!
- As is the case with many Campus Rec programs, the evening Kickboxing classes fill up FAST. If you want to make the attendance cutoff, make sure you're arriving as early as you can. Make sure to bring your Cat Card if you have not signed up for our biometrics sign in. (You will also need to have purchased a group fitness pass or purchase one for the day.)
- The only pieces of equipment that are recommended for the class are hand wraps, which provide wrist support when punching. These can be checked out or purchased at the Fitness Center's front desk.
The Warmup
- The class begins with circuits of general workouts that include cardio, abs, legs, and arms. These workouts are designed to move at a quick pace, but all attendees are encouraged to do what matches their skill level.
- Can't do a push up to save your life? No problem! There is no pressure to overexert yourself, and there's no judgment if you need to take a break. If you're doing you're best, then you're welcome at any and every Campus Rec class.
The Class
- After warmups are done, attendees break into pairs and take turns practicing different techniques of punches and kicks. Instructor Dan demonstrates the pattern of punches and kicks, giving both standard and advanced pattern options, and students switch off practicing every few minutes, punching and kicking against padded mats and gloves.
- You don't necessarily need to know anyone in the class to come – plenty of people come without a partner! This is a great way to make a new friend on campus.
Next month we'll highlight our Cycling classes!
