Five Tips for Finals Season Success - Fall 2019
Before we can head home for food, family and holiday festivities… we have to make it through FINALS SEASON (dun dun). From the freezing temperatures, to the doom of imminent exams and due dates, it's easy to start feeling overwhelmed and (dare I say it) get sick!
Here are some tips for staying healthy, focused and energized as you finish up the semester:
Before we can head home for food, family and holiday festivities… we have to make it through FINALS SEASON (dun dun). From the freezing temperatures, to the doom of imminent exams and due dates, it's easy to start feeling overwhelmed and (dare I say it) get sick!
Here are some tips for staying healthy, focused and energized as you finish up the semester:
- Get Organized & Make a Plan
The best way to calm your nerves and start preparing for the busiest time of the semester is to organize! Write down all of your upcoming due dates, and set aside time to study for each of your exams. By scheduling when you are going to study for each exam, you will maximize your study time and minimize the stress! Check out the UVM Registrar's Study Tips here.
- Fitness is your Friend
It can be hard to find the time (or the will!) to work out during finals season… but the best way to combat stress and beat procrastination is by staying active!! Don't get me wrong, naps are important (read: Tip #3), but scheduling at least 30-45 minutes of activity a day will increase your endorphin levels - making you happier, less stressed and more focused - so you can head back to the library ready to be productive! We have FREE FOOD in the Fitness Center and GROUP FITNESS after 3:30pm in the Campus Rec Studio on Monday, December 9 and Tuesday December 10. On Wednesday December 11 the classes in the Campus Rec Studio are FREE ALL DAY! We will also have make and take essential oil rollers! Check the schedule here.
- Get Those Zzz's
You don't have to tell me twice - nap time is the best time of the day. But with more and more work, sometimes it seems like a good idea to swap shut-eye for studying! We've all probably pulled the classic all-nighter right before an exam… but cramming isn't the answer. The best way to recharge so you are feeling fresh and focused is to sleep. If you are organized and have that study plan (read: Tip #1), then there should be no need to stay up all night studying and you can get that recommended 8 hours in. You'll thank yourself later - good sleep can improve your productivity and concentration!
- Healthy Eating: Put Good In, Get Good Out!
It may be tempting to indulge in pizza and ice cream and lots of other goodies. Though treating yourself after a long day is always a good idea (at least in my opinion), it is important to maintain a balanced diet - especially during stressful times.- Eat a healthy breakfast (most important meal of the day!): eggs, oatmeal, fruits.
- Bring healthy snacks to the library when studying (because studying always makes me hungrier, somehow): apples with peanut butter, carrots and hummus, fruit smoothies.
- Add protein: chicken, beans, spinach and beets are all great ways to add protein to your diet to keep you fuller and focused longer!
- Don't forget the veggies!: Add color to your dinner with all kinds of veggies.. My favorite thing to do is to hit up the salad bar at the dining hall!
- DRINK LOTS OF WATER!
- ~Relax & Unwind~
Last, but not least, it's important to take some ME time. Take time to relax, unwind and do something you love! Listen to your favorite music, practice meditation, pet some dogs. Do whatever makes you feel good & happy - you deserve it!
