Shelby Hinkle Smith

Dr. Shelby Hinkle Smith is the Senior Associate Director of Campus Recreation, Programs in the Department of Athletics at the University of Vermont where she has worked since 2007. She is the chair of the Campus Recreation Student Development Committee, Co-Chair of the Catamount Professional Development Committee, and a member of the Student Affairs Professionals in Higher Education (NASPA) and National Intramural-Recreation Sports Association (NIRSA) professional organizations. Shelby also served as a lecturer for ten years, teaching health and wellness and leadership courses in UVM’s Health and Wellness and Outdoor Experience Learning Communities.

Shelby currently serves as a member of the NIRSA Assembly, the "think-tank for the future of collegiate recreation."  She has also been a recipient of UVM awards including: the 2019 Our Common Ground Award, the Athletic Department Award of Excellence in 2014 and 2016, and the 2016 Athletic Department Award of Excellence - Team Award for the Campus Recreation Student Development Committee.

Shelby earned a BA from the University of Colorado at Boulder in Kinesiology, a MS in Athletic Administration from Ohio University, and her Ph.D. in the social psychology of sport and exercise from the University of Northern Colorado.

An upstate New York native and current Shelburne resident, Hinkle Smith enjoys skiing, playing field hockey, reading, exploring new places, and spending time with her partner Justin and daughter Parker.
